. john boehner said his plan cuts $2.2 trillion over ten years. you shouldn't be comparing those two nubs. what you should think about is $16 trillion. that's how much debt the country has. according to bill groesdz, the man who runs the biggest fund, ie, the man who decides how much we can spend and borrow, we have to cut spending or raise taxes. that's $1.6 trillion a year. that's $1.2 trillion a year more than the president proposes. and $1.38 trillion a year more than john boehner has offered. yeah. peanuts. i recently spoke with erskine bowles, the bowles of simpson-bowles, and he agrees that he's right. >> absolutely. he's 1pen hearst right. i don't know if 16 is the number, but i would be happier at $5 trillion or $6 trillion because that's what we need to solve the number long term. >> those are big numbers. i want to bring in john avlon right now. this is what i find so incredible. we get so focused on is there going to be a deal, and the politics of a deal and going off the cliff and if the cliff is a slope that we're missing the bigger picture that we have a crisis that's

. that's when severe tax hikes and cuts in spending begin. according to the "new york times," john boehner has asked democratic leaders to step aside so he and the president can attempt to negotiate a deal one-on-one and no one is objecting. paul steinhauser is live from washington. paul, you got some new polling for us. what do americans want to see in a deal? >> it's interesting what they want to see and what they don't want to see. one of the biggest sticking points between democrats and republicans over averting the fiscal cliff is raising taxes on those making over $250,000 a year. look at this from quinnipiac university, the question was asked are you okay with that? 65% say they support such a move to avert the fiscal cliff. this is the third poll over the last two weeks to show the same thing, that most americans are okay with raising those taxes on incomes over $250,000 a year. go to the next screen, there's a partisan divide here. this explains why most republicans are dead set against this. democrats are fine with that move. independents as well. but only a minority of r

listen to house speaker john boehner talk about conversations with the president. they are talking, soledad. the staff of both the white house and house republicans are in touch, but speaker boehner said about his sunday conversation with president obama that it was cordial, and then he said about his tuesday conversation with the president that it was deliberate and frank. so you -- it doesn't take too much to read between the lines there to show you that things are not going that well. they have exchanged another set of counteroffers to no avail, and still at this point there is this impasse over tax rates. the white house, president obama saying that the income tax rate for earnings over a quarter million dollars must go up. republicans saying no and accusing the president of not being specific about spending cuts and entitlement reforms, reform medicare, medicaid and social security. >> so let me ask you a question about this report that we're hearing that the obama administration might be looking at a republican to succeed the defense secretary, leon panetta. who is on that li

phone to give john boehner a call after both traded fiscal cliff proposals. neither sealed a deal, so we're now 20 days away from almost $500 billion this automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. i sound like a broken record. along with the potential for a new recession. shannon travis is following the deal make. do we know what was in the proposals? >> we're getting details in drips and drabs. the white house has offered according to a source telling cnn to basically revise their revenue target. p president obama originally proposed $1.6 trillion in new revenue. he wants to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now we're being told that he's revised that number down to $1.4 trillion. that's obviously a difference of $200 billion. a democratic aide also telling cnn, i'll read the quote, that offer was coupled with a serious spending cut number with real entitlement reform. so that's from the white house side. on the counterproposal from the republicans, we don't have a lot of details on that, but from boehner's office, republicans are basically awaiting spending cut specifics

this, trust me. but as house speaker john boehner reminded us just a short time ago, there is still no deal on the table. he and president obama spoke on the phone late yesterday after trading offers back and forth, and although there is a lot of talking going on, they haven't necessarily agreed on anything yet, certainly not that they're making public. this is what the white house's offer looks like as it stands. a $1.4 trillion request for new tax revenue. that is down from the last offer which was a request for $1.6 trillion in revenues. still too high, though. it also includes some new stimulus spending, an increase in u.s.'s borrowing limit and a plan to overhaul the corporate tax code. here's what speaker boehner said last hour. >> his promise to bring a balanced approach to solving this problem is mainly tax hikes. and his plan does not begin to solve our debt crisis. it actually increases spending. our plan meets these standards, it cuts spending and paves the way of real job growth in our country. in the five weeks since we signalled our willingness to forge an agreement with
